Evgeny V. Malinin (1930 - 2001) is a famous Russian pianist and pedagogue, Professor of the Moscow Conservatory, Peoples’ Artist of the USSR. Evgeny Malinin was born in a family of musicians of the noble background. His grandfather Eugene Voloshinov, in whose honor the future pianist was named, played the piano beautifully and composed music. His mother Maria Malinina was a singer at the Bolshoi Theater. Evgeny Malinin started his musical education when he was four years old at the Central Music School in Moscow under the tutorship of Tatiana Bobovich. He then studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Professor Henrich Neuhaus (graduated with honors in 1954) later on, he followed the postgraduate course in the same class (graduated in 1957). Evgeny Malinin started his concert career while he was still a student after winning a number of international contests. The young pianist became a laureate of the Second World Youth and Student Festival in Budapest, the Frederic Chopin International Competition in Warsaw and the Marguerite Long Competition in Paris. In the 50s Evgeny Malinin toured a lot in the Soviet Union and abroad. In 1961 the pianist has been elected the honorary member of the Rome Academy of the World Culture. The pianist toured in more than 26 countries as a soloist of the Moscow Philharmony. He performed with such famous conductors as Pietro Argento, Igor Bezrodny, Alexander Gauk, Andre Cluytens, Kirill Kondrashin, Charles Munch, Mario Rossi, Samuil Samosud, Yevgeni Svetlanov. Among his most significant interpretations were Sergei Rachmaniniov’s Second Piano Concerto, Pictures at the Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, as well as various compositions of Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt. Malinin’s solo recitals, his performances with the leading orchestras and in a trio with Natalia Shakhovskaya and Eduard Grach have been many times recorded for the National Radio Funds and by the National Melodia Record Studio, as well as the recording studios of Great Britain, France and Japan. In 1957 Evgeny Malinin started teaching at the Moscow State Conservatory as an assistant to professor Neuhaus. Since 1963, he had his own special piano class. The pianist gave master classes at the Moscow Conservatory as well as the music schools and colleges of the Soviet Union and abroad. He had his classes at the international courses of advanced performance in USA, Yugoslavia, Japan and France where he had been awarded the Golden Cross Order. Since 1991, Malinin has been teaching at the Moscow Conservatory Summer school. Many of his students became laureates of the international contests. Among them are Tatiana Verkina, Sergei Glavatskikh, Larissa Dedova, Ludmila Kuznetsova, Anna Manasarova, Irina Osipova, Natalia Pankova, Ivo Pogorelich, Yuri Rozum, Yevgeny Rivkin, Yuri Smirnov, Dmitri Teterin, Mikhail Trushechkin, Polina Fedotova, Tatiana Fed’kina, Alexander Fomenko. Over many years the pianist worked in the juries of more than twenty international contests: in Paris (1969), Munich (1970, 1972), Fort-Worth, USA (1973), Warsaw (1975) he participated in the jury of Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow several times. From the middle of the 1990s, Evgeny Malinin lived and worked in Germany. Since 1997, Evgeny Malinin has been the Honorary President of the Russian department of the European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA-Russia), representing the Russian piano school on the European level.
